To complement the government’s Free Quality Education initiative, the International Open University (formerly Islamic Online University) has launched the One Million Scholarship program in Sierra Leone for all Sierra Leoneans. The launching ceremony took place on Tuesday November 27th 2018 in the presence of its board members at the residence of the board chairman Alhaji Murtada Sesay in Goderich during a dinner organized by the chairman in honor of the guests that was sent by IOU Administration from the Gambia and Ghana.

The IOU representatives in The Gambia Hajiah Aminata Jaiteh and Ghana Mr. Samudeen Yusif who were sent from the IOU Head Quarters told their audience that the scholarships are meant for 10 English speaking countries in Africa namely: The Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia and Liberia.

According to the team this countries were chosen because they are English speaking countries and they are also nations which are in desperate need of tertiary education but because of the high cost they couldn’t afford it.

The chancellor, Dr Bilal Philips in his own words says that: “if we educate our youths they will refrain from joining terrorist groups like; Bokoharam, ISIS, Abusayyaaf and Shabaab. It will also save them from dying in the seas between Libya and Spain as we experienced in the past years”.

The board chairman received the scholarship package on behalf government which he will hand over to the relevant authorities later on.
